Foucault and the revolutionary self-castration of the Left

We don't agree with this view on Foucault's work...we think his view is much more open and it gives a key points to think about power and its relationship which knowledge and everyone of us...Lets say it gives the possibility of a deep metamophosis to the resistance which is still devote of the Il.lustration project..it talks about the need to break with this path...to listen the voice of the of hte silenced ones, the european heterodoxy and its gives the absolutely neceesary path for the understanding with other knowledge traditions...

anyway we are so glad to publish it here at desRealitat...because diversity is the best think could happen to us..

Post image for Foucault and the revolutionary self-castration of the Left

Far from posing a counter-hegemonic challenge to the dominant powers in the world, Foucault’s armchair philosophy simply made resistance impossible.

I first encountered the work of Michel Foucault in college. Intrigued but confused, I decided to look for videos of the intellectual giant explaining his theories in a way that might be more intelligible than his obscurantist writings. To my excitement, I encountered a fascinating debate between Foucault and Chomsky aired on Dutch television in 1971. The exchange between the figureheads of the European and American Left, respectively, was a true clash of titans. By the end of it, however, I had lost most of my short-lived obsession with Foucault and had sided instead with the radical linguist Chomsky.

Dozens killed and thousands injured as protesters take back Tahrir Square in a bid to reclaim their revolution and overthrow the military regime.

After 9 months of slow-motion “trench warfare”, during which the military transition council hijacked the popular uprising and the world turned its eyes away from the Middle East and towards the protests and crises unfolding in the West, the Egyptian Revolution flared up in mighty intensity this weekend as thousands of protesters fought running street battles with riot police in an attempt to reclaim Tahrir Square and overthrow the military junta.

What if we refuse to be citizens?

A Manifesto for Vacating Civic Order

Santiago López Petit

We are Interpellated as Citizens

Today’s citizen is no longer a free person. Citizens are no longer free people who want to live in a free community. A political consciousness that is not taught, but rather conquered, has gradually disappeared. It could not have happened another way. Public space has become a street full of shops that never close, an ongoing television show in which an idiot tells us in detail why he separated from his wife. School, in turn, is not asked to promote a critical consciousness but to merely impart learning of “correct” civic behaviors, variations of a pretense “education for citizenship.” Political struggles seem likewise to have disappeared from a world in which there are only diverse types of catastrophes (economic, environmental, natural, etc.). However, when politicians address us, when they pay lip service to calls of participation, keep calling us citizens. Why? Why is this word, which little by little has been emptied of all political force, still in use?

Working Notes for a Revolution

Simona Levi
Barcelona, 23 June, 2011

The contribution I can make is basically some working notes in relation to the activities of the last few months, which are about the type of struggle we have been constructing over the past few years and, on a practical level, on how to face up to the problems that we are encountering at this point.
We believe that the struggle we have been participating in – for the defense of the Internet and sharing – has been crucial for arriving at the #15M movement.
Crucial at two levels.
Firstly for the maturity it has created, which cuts right across all layers of public opinion, both in terms of defending something that belongs to it and is in danger of being snatched away – the neutral Internet – , and secondly in terms of ethical ways of relating to others.

They All Have to Go. Let’s build our own world

Santiago López Petit,

Originally in Spanish

The phrase, “that’s life” was the capitalist slogan that for years marked neoliberalism’s triumph over our bodies. In hospitals, in schools, in factories… confronted with any demand, their reply was always the same: “that’s life”. In other words, shut up, obey, put your head down… because what is coming will surely be worse. This sensation of generalized impotence had found its way deep inside, like a worm feeding on us, even up to our own will to live. What is there to fight for? What to fight against? What can I do alone?

The unease grew bit by bit. The indignation and rage at seeing our lives being crushed on a daily basis, turned into a kleenex to be used and then thrown away. Meanwhile, the Arab world caught fire. What had seemed impossible was suddenly happening. My uneasiness is also yours, and yours and his and hers… the politicization of the uneasiness outside of the traditional codes allows us to move beyond the impasse in which we were stuck. The marvelous phrase, “real democracy, now” is a good start to the rebellion. It is only a scream, and a scream does not need explication. A scream of disgust against this world, and, at the same time, a scream full of life that forces shut the mouths of all the politicians, that interrupts their monologues, sinking them like the frauds that they are.

Lawrence of Arabia and the (Non) Battle of Sol

Amador Fernández-Savater

In 1929, the editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica commissioned T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, to write the entry on “guerrilla warfare” for its 14th edition. In the ensuing text, Lawrence set out the theoretical foundations of the Arab guerrilla against Turkish rule that he himself had led between 1916 and 1918. At Acuarela Libros we published that wonderful text in 2004, along with a study by one of the members of the Italian writers’ collective Wu Ming – specifically, Wu Ming 4 (this autumn, by the way, we will publish Estrella de la mañana, a novel by Wu Ming 4 that features Lawrence as the main character). You can read Science of Guerrilla Warfare here.
As I was rereading the two texts (barely 60 pages in total) over the last few days, I kept getting flashbacks to images of our recent experiences in Madrid during the first week of August: the occupation of Plaza del Sol by the police (this central square in Madrid been taken over by spontaneous camps and an information point since the May 15 mobilisations), the mass demonstrations circulating around downtown Madrid in the middle of the usually sleepy summer, and the final liberation of the square on the night of the 5th – another of those true celebrations that the 15-M movement is getting us dangerously used to.

#spanishrevolution. The Return of the Force with No Name.

Leónidas Martín

In order to avoid the victory of those who scare me, I’ve spent my whole life voting for parties that make me sick. This time I’m not going to do it”. These aren’t my words, they were posted on Twitter by somebody the other day. Some guy that I’ll never meet. A person possessed by “The Force with No Name”.
Seven years ago, on March 13, 2004, I turned up at the headquarters of Spanish conservative party Partido Popular to demonstrate against the Iraq war and its consequences – the Madrid bombings among others. Nobody had organised that demonstration, I received the summons through sms and e-mail and I’ll never meet the people who sent these either.

A protester in the peaceful Occupy Oakland demonstration, was shot in the head

The world is watching: we are all Scott Olsen!

Post image for The world is watching: we are all Scott Olsen!

While the Iraq Veteran and Occupy Oakland protester remains in critical condition, let us send a powerful message to those in power: the world is watching!

Yesterday, the United States and the world witnessed yet another gross violation of the basic human right to popular assembly and peaceful protest. A 24-year old Iraq veteran Scott Olsen, a protester in the peaceful Occupy Oaklandshot in the head during an extremely violent police crackdown on the movement. He remains in critical condition with a fractured skull and brain swelling. demonstration, was
Scott is a former marine and a member of Veterans for Peace. He served 2 tours in Iraq (although he opposed the war) and came home safe. Then, in Oakland, he was struck in the head by a rubber bullet or other “non-lethal” projectile while exercising his patriotic duty to demand a government that is accountable to its people. When others tried to help him as he lay unconscious on the ground, they too were deliberately shot with rubber bullets and flash bang grenades.
The crackdown on Occupy Oakland and the shooting of Scott Olsen is rapidly becoming a symbol for the indiscriminate attacks on unarmed civilians and the violent police repression of our global protest movement. From Athens to New York, from Barcelona to Boston and from Cairo to Oakland, a pattern is revealing itself that shows authorities desperately clinging to power through the exercise of brute force and wanton criminality. This cannot stand.
At the same time, we know that if our governments resort to violence, we must be doing something right. In just a few months, our movement has managed to uproot the implicit consensus that used to underpin the dominant neoliberal world order. By publicly displaying our discontent, by openly contesting the hegemony of financial capital, and by fearlessly challenging the criminal and corrupt elites that are supposed to represent us, we have revealed the real power relations in our society, as well as the undemocratic essence of the system itself.
Let us all keep Scott and his family in our minds in these difficult days and hope for a full and speedy recovery. Let us also not forget that, along with Scott, millions of people around the world are exposed to state violence on a daily basis. Let us remember that we are not only to be outraged at the repression of our movement, but also at the brutality leveraged against those who do not even have the luxury to speak out and protest, including many Oakland residents, who have been suffering from notorious police abuse for decades on end.
But most important of all, on this day, let us send out a powerful message to those in power: the world is watching! We will not stand by idly as you violate the very principles upon which your mandate depends. We will not close our eyes as you brutalize our brothers and sisters around the world. We will not back down. We will not give up. As Victor Hugo once wrote, you can stop an invasion of armies, but you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.
Here are a few things you can do to help us stay united against police brutality:
  1. Join the We are all Scott Olsen Facebook page to express solidarity and denounce the violent police repression of our peaceful protest movement;
  2. Go onto the Facebook page of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and the website of the City of Oakland (choose safety/police in the drop-down menu) to express your disgust with her decision to evict the camp and authorize the use of brute force against peaceful protesters;
  3. If you are an Oakland resident, join the campaign to Recall Mayor Quan;
  4. Follow Occupy Together and take to the streets of your city, demanding action to be taken against those responsible for violating human rights and inflicting injuries upon our people;
  5. Realize that at the end of the day, we need to get the police on our side in the struggle against financial power and political corruption — so be civil and respectful, and keep fighting peaceably for your rights.
We are the change. We will rise above this. The world is watching.

Call to action: #RobinHood global march on October 29

On the eve of the G20 in France, let the people rise up and demand the imposition of a 1% #ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades.
Adbusters, the Canadian anti-consumerist magazine that made the initial call for the occupation of Wall Street, is calling for another global day of action on Saturday, October 29. Here is an excerpt from their rallying cry:
This is a proposal for the general assemblies of the Occupy movement.
On October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let’s the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1%#ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. Let’s send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3-trillion easy money that’s sloshing around the global casino each day – enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.
Take this idea to your local general assembly and join your comrades in the streets on October 29.

OCT 15th Global revolution: protests in 1,000+ cities — in videos

from our friends of
www.roarmag.org

Millions of people took to the streets of over 1,000 cities across the world yesterday to protest against corporate greed and for a real global democracy.
Compiling this incredible list of videos was probably the single most exciting thing we’ve done since we started ROAR. When we set up the blog in August last year, we knew something was in the air but we never even dared to expect anything like this. Just 10 months after Tunis and Tahrir, this weekend we witnessed the globalization of the resistance: millions of people in 1,000 cities in over 80 countries on 6 continents uniting for global change. Brothers and sisters, we are making history. And we’re only just getting started!

Sgt Shamar Thomas is a bear of a man. If another police riot breaks out in New York, you definitely want this guy on your side. So when he confronted a small army of policemen this weekend, the officers were rightly shaking in their boots. The Washington Post has some background on the amazing standoff he had with NYPD last night.
Have a look at this video to see the type of police brutality that Thomas was referring to:

En el crack de 2008 se destruyó más propiedad privada, conseguida con gran esfuerzo, que si todos los presentes se pusieran a destruir día y noche durante semanas. Nos dicen que somos soñadores. Los verdaderos soñadores son aquellos que piensan que las cosas seguirán siendo como son indefinidamente. Nosotros no somos soñadores, sino los que estamos despertando de un sueño que se ha convertido en pesadilla. No estamos destruyendo nada, sino siendo testigos de cómo el sistema se destruye a sí mismo.

Panic of the Plutocrats

By Paul Krugman

October 10, 2011 "NYTimes" - -It remains to be seen whether the Occupy Wall Street protests will change America’s direction. Yet the protests have already elicited a remarkably hysterical reaction from Wall Street, the super-rich in general, and politicians and pundits who reliably serve the interests of the wealthiest hundredth of a percent.

And this reaction tells you something important — namely, that the extremists threatening American values are what F.D.R. called “economic royalists,” not the people camping in Zuccotti Park.

Consider first how Republican politicians have portrayed the modest-sized if growing demonstrations, which have involved some confrontations with the police — confrontations that seem to have involved a lot of police overreaction — but nothing one could call a riot. And there has in fact been nothing so far to match the behavior of Tea Party crowds in the summer of 2009.

Palabras desde Atenas

Slavoj Žižek at Occupy Wall Street. It is easy for us to imagine the end of the world—see numerous apocalyptic films -, but not the end of capitalism.

Slavoj Žižek at Occupy Wall Street: “We are not dreamers, we are the awakening from a dream which is turning into a nightmare”

Slavoj Žižek visited Liberty Plaza to speak to Occupy Wall Street protesters. Here is the full transcript of his speech.
Don't fall in love with yourselves, with the nice time we are having here. Carnivals come cheap—the true test of their worth is what remains the day after, how our normal daily life will be changed. Fall in love with hard and patient work—we are the beginning, not the end. Our basic message is: the taboo is broken, we do not live in the best possible world, we are allowed and obliged even to think about alternatives. There is a long road ahead, and soon we will have to address the truly difficult questions—questions not about what we do not want, but about what we DO want. What social organization can replace the existing capitalism? What type of new leaders we need? The XXth century alternatives obviously did not work.

Occupy Wall Street: The Most Important Thing in the World Now

By Naomi Klein
I was honored to be invited to speak at Occupy Wall Street on Thursday night. Since amplification is (disgracefully) banned, and everything I said had to be repeated by hundreds of people so others could hear (a.k.a. “the human microphone”), what I actually said at Liberty Plaza had to be very short. With that in mind, here is the longer, uncut version of the speech.
October 07, 2011 "The Nation" --  I love you.

And I didn’t just say that so that hundreds of you would shout “I love you” back, though that is obviously a bonus feature of the human microphone. Say unto others what you would have them say unto you, only way louder.

Yesterday, one of the speakers at the labor rally said: “We found each other.” That sentiment captures the beauty of what is being created here. A wide-open space (as well as an idea so big it can’t be contained by any space) for all the people who want a better world to find each other. We are so grateful.

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

Posted on September 30, 2011 by NYCGA
This document was accepted by the NYC General Assembly on september 29, 2011

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

Noam Chomsky to RT: Bush torturer, Obama just kills

sorry for the commercial at the beginning!...
excusas por el anuncio al principio!...

Pinning its hopes on the sole support of the US, Israel risks a collapse if it is ever withdrawn - much like apartheid-era South Africa, prominent scholar Professor Noam Chomsky warns. He recalls how South Africans felt safe to ignore a UN embargo and corporations pulling out of their country throughout the 1980s, as long as the Reagan administration continued to support them. As soon as the US withdrew its support, the apartheid regime collapsed. "For 35 years, the US and Israel have been rejecting a political settlement that is supported virtually by the entire world. A couple of months ago, there was a meeting of the oligarchs -- people who pretty much run the economy [of Israel]," Chomsky says, "and they warned the government that it better accept something like this resolution, because otherwise, Israel will be, as they put it, South Africanized: even more isolated, with boycotts, refusal to load ships, and their economy will collapse."

TRANSCRIPT

Fox: Jesse, so Ray, your partner here, your ..

Ray: comrade.

Fox: Your colleague, she’d seen the protests in Greece and Europe and elsewhere. Did you guys take your cue from that? Are you hoping to cite certainly what was a lot of the tension, if not police activity. I know over the weekend there were over 100 arrests and you guys got things fired up. Are you taking your cues from the international movement and how do you want to see this? If you could have it in a perfect way, how would it be?

Jesse: Well I don’t know, its really difficult to answer questions leading to those conclusions. I’d say that we didn’t take our cue leading off of anybody really. It became a more spontaneous movement. As far as seeing this end, I wouldn’t like to see this end. I would like to see the conversation continue. This is what we should have been talking about in 2008 when the economy collapsed. We basically patched a hole on the tire and said let the car keep rolling. Unfortunately it’s fun to talk to the propaganda machine and the media especially conservative media networks such as yourself, because we find that we cant get conversations for the department of Justice’s ongoing investigation of News Corporation, for which you are an employee. But we can certainly ask questions like you know, why are the poor engaging in class warfare? After 30 years of having our living standards decrease while the wealthiest 1% have had it better than ever, I think it’s time for some maybe, I don’t know, participation in our democracy that isn’t funded by news cameras and gentlemen such as yourself.

McKenzie Wark on Occupy Wall Street: 'How to Occupy an Abstraction'

By Mc Kenzie Wark / 03 October 2011

The occupation isn't actually on Wall Street, of course. And while there is actually a street called Wall Street in downtown Manhattan, “Wall Street” is more of a concept, an abstraction. So what the occupation is doing is taking over a little (quasi) public square in the general vicinity of Wall Street in the financial district and turning it into something like an allegory. Against the abstraction of Wall Street, it proposes another, perhaps no less abstract story.

NYPD Arrests 700 #OccupyWallStreet Protesters On The Brooklyn Bridge

Protesters started marching up the pedestrian walk way over the bridge while others tried to take the traffic lane. For a few minutes officers held the line and then they turned around and led the way up the traffic lane on the Brooklyn Bridge. From what I saw no police told any of the protesters to leave until they created a barricade in front of the march about halfway through the bridge. They then pulled vans and buses up to the back of the group and started arresting everyone.

In total over 700 people were arrested.

Diez tesis sobre las rebeliones árabes

ADONIS 02/10/2011

New York police arrest 700 protesters on Brooklyn Bridge

Post image for New York police arrest 500+ protesters on Brooklyn Bridge
In what appears to have been an unprecedented coordinated clampdown on peaceful protest, the NYPD today trapped and arrested hundreds.
Today, New York witnessed an unprecedented clampdown on the constitutional right to peaceful civic protest: in what appears to have been a coordinated move by authorities, the NYPD tricked protesters into walking onto Brooklyn Bridge so it could execute a meticulously planned mass arrest of hundreds of entirely peaceful protesters. Among the 400+ detainees were at least two young children, a photographer and a freelance journalist.

MECA no gana.

No More Victims: Stop the Wars and Bring the Troops Home

Since 2003 No More Victims has secured treatment for children injured by US forces. After ten years of war, it's time for Americans to act decisively: we must end the wars and commit our resources to creating jobs and rebuilding the ramshackle infrastructure of our own country. As Eisenhower said: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed."

Michael Moore on CNN: “Wall Street uprising will spread”

The documentary-maker went on Piers Morgan’s talk show last night to warn the US that anger against economic injustice would make protests spread.
After visiting the protest camp in Zuccotti Park earlier that day, Michael Moore went on CNN to give a shout out to the young people demonstrating in Wall Street against the financial sector’s control over the US political system, warning America that this only just the beginning:

¿Cómo que los griegos “rehúsan ahorrar”? Un jurista de Viena, que está sobre el terreno en Atenas, les ha observado en su día a día y ha llegado a la conclusión de que ahorran hasta la saciedad.

No podemos quedamos impasibles ante las distintas declaraciones de los altos dirigentes de Europa, algunos rozan la imbecilidad en sus manifestaciones respecto a esos “holgazanes” de los griegos que “rehúsan ahorrar”.
